Our mission for the auction is to provide a venue through which consignors can dispose of their treasures at good prices while also creating a clearinghouse for collectors to enhance their collections and show their pride in Cincinnati’s history via the opportunity to purchase quality steins and Cincinnati-area breweriana. We also celebrate Cincinnati’s rich German ethnic and cultural history as evident in the numerous links to steins, Cincinnati breweries, and the Over-the-Rhine area where it all began.
The March 2007 auction had over 400 steins, mugs, and breweriana items ranging from $5 to $2,000. Gross sales amounted to $26,000 with $21,000 being returned to the consignors. We are proud to announce a fourfold increase in sales since the auction’s inception in 2005. There is no buyer’s premium. Susan Weitzel will again “dirndl-up” and be our auctioneer. Of course German food and quality Moerlein beers will be featured at the auction and add to the festive atmosphere.

Consignments for the auction can be taken at any of the below dates. If consigning, please consign early as quality consignments will be photographed and featured on the website. Early quality consignments will also receive priority in all print advertising. Large collections can be accommodated, please call for special arrangements. The cutoff date for consignments is February 10th, 2008. Commissions are very reasonable at only 15%. We keep commission rates low due to our experienced and efficient volunteer staff. Commissions and donations benefit the Germania Society’s building improvement projects and cultural programs. Quality items can be protected with reserve prices.
Free appraisal dates for the auction include Steins in the Rhine II on Nov. 10th, 2007 at Kaldi’s at 1202 Main Street in Cincinnati from 11 AM till 6 PM. Last year the event was spectacular and the public will be able to enjoy Moerlein beers and food appropriate to the atmosphere of the 1860s Over-the-Rhine area. Limited edition Brewery District posters and a portion of Kaldi’s sales will be donated to the Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corp., a non-profit dedicated to the revitalization of Cincinnati’s historic Over-the-Rhine brewery district. If you want to celebrate Cincinnati’s rich German brewery history, this is the place to come and enjoy a truly festive day.
Other free appraisal dates include Sunday Nov. 18th, 2007 from noon till 5 PM at the ChristKindl Markt (admission $3.00) on the Germania Society grounds. Look for the stein display table in the heated tent next to the Pavillion. The Klubhaus will host two additional appraisal dates. The first will be on Sunday Jan. 13th, 2008 from noon till 5 PM. The final appraisal date is Feb. 3rd, 2008 from noon till 3 PM. Appraisals are always free and do not obligate you to consign to the auction.

11 February 2008 - We are very pleased to announce that a 2007 First Edition Moerlein Rookwood Stein will also be sold at the stein auction. This is one of only 200 made last year by the Rookwood Pottery Company and features the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company and the genesis of Cincinnati's great brewing heritage in the Over-the-Rhine area of Cincinnati. This edition sold out in about fifteen minutes after it was unveiled at Bockfest 2007. The first edition features the same great artwork as the second edition, however, the glaze is a wonderful matt blue green with wheat and green highlights. On the bottom are the artists' signatures of Terri Kern and Allan Nairn, as well as the signatures of Gregory Hardman, President of Christian Moerlein Brewing Company, and Chris Rose, President of the Rookwood Pottery Company. Master sculptor Gary Simon's initials are evident on the body of the stein. This particular stein was not personalized with the owner's name. So if you failed to get the first edition 2007 Moerlein Rookwood stein, this can be your chance to own a fantastic piece of Cincinnati brewery and art pottery history. For more information on this wonderful item, please call George Hibben at 513-367-2150.
